Animal Success Stories

"My little dog---a heartbeat at my feet."  Edith Wharton

Our lives will forever be enriched because of the dachsies that touched our hearts in rescue, but we know the real healing does not begin until they leave our care.  We encourage, we celebrate, we do everything we can to give them the skills they need to put their best paw forward as they wait for their forever families to find them . . . and then the time comes to say goodbye.

Often we shed tears.  We remember when they came in, how far they’ve come, the hiccups along the way – we laugh, we cry – and then we always say a little prayer as we send them on their way.  We hope they find the confidence to keep that best paw forward, because we know, when they do, they will truly flourish.  It is then, they will heal; it is then, they will find peace.

If you have adopted one of our adorable dachsies, and would like to contribute a Success Story, please e-mail dakotadachshund@hotmail.com, and we will add it to the website.  Be sure to send us a current picture.  We do love pictures!!!

I first heard about Dakota Dachshund Rescue when my grandpa was successfully matched with a dachshund named Scooter. DDR did an awesome job matching those two- Scooter has a tendency to have separation anxiety and my grandpa has a tendency to want to take his dog everywhere with him! My first dog, Hunter, I purchased as a puppy. I love him dearly, but having my home puppy-proof and working on his potty training were quite the challenge for me as I work full-time. I used to have a roommate, who also had a doxie, and Hunter and him were inseparable. When I purchased my new home (and no longer had my roommate around nor his dog) I knew I needed to get me and my Hunter a new family member and friend. I felt that it would be best for me, my new dog, and my new home if I had a dog that was further along in house-training than most puppies are. I also wanted to make sure that I adopted a dog that loves to play as Hunter loves to play! I filled out the adoption application without choosing a particular dog, as I felt DDR's feedback would help me adopt the right dog as they had for my grandpa. They provided feedback on who they felt would be best with what I was looking for. They helped me in selecting Bingo, who happens to be the perfect match for me and Hunter! Bingo was a little shy for the first couple days, but DDR provided many helpful tips on how to brighten Bingo's day and make him feel at home. I was informed of his favorite treats, meals, and his absolute favorite activity, playing fetch with a squeaky ball! Now Bingo is smiling much of the time and is getting lots of time playing fetch in the backyard with Hunter and me. Each day, he comes out of his shell a little more! Bingo and Hunter are teaching eachother a few tricks as well. Bingo has the cutest way of begging for treats and attention by sitting on his hind legs with his front paws at his chest and his head tilted. Just today, I looked over and saw both Bingo and Hunter begging Bingo-style at my feet! Hunter is a big fan of play wrestling and initially, Bingo didn't want to wrestle with him. The past couple days, I've seen both of them running throgh the house play wrestling with their tails wagging! Bingo has been a great joy to have around. It's only been a couple weeks and Hunter and I have already bonded to Bingo! I and am so grateful to Dakota Dachshund Rescue for helping me find my new family member!
