Animal Success Stories
"My little dog---a heartbeat at my feet." Edith Wharton Our lives will forever be enriched because of the dachsies that touched our hearts in rescue, but we know the real healing does not begin until they leave our care. We encourage, we celebrate, we do everything we can to give them the skills they need to put their best paw forward as they wait for their forever families to find them . . . and then the time comes to say goodbye. Often we shed tears. We remember when they came in, how far they’ve come, the hiccups along the way – we laugh, we cry – and then we always say a little prayer as we send them on their way. We hope they find the confidence to keep that best paw forward, because we know, when they do, they will truly flourish. It is then, they will heal; it is then, they will find peace. If you have adopted one of our adorable dachsies, and would like to contribute a Success Story, please e-mail dakotadachshund@hotmail.com, and we will add it to the website. Be sure to send us a current picture. We do love pictures!!! Please visit our Success Stories page to read all of our stories!
Bruno My husband and I lost our beloved dachshund, Oscar, in November 2011. He was only 5 years old and it was one of the worst experiences of our lives. After the dust settled we knew we wanted to adopt from DDR. I had fostered 2 dogs with the rescue in the past. Let's face it; once you have a dachshund, no other breed will do. I had called Diane to talk to her about a dog that had just been adopted by his foster mom. Diane had another dog in mind-Brutus (also known as Bruno). He wasn't up for adoption yet as she was waiting for some blood work to come back to ensure he was adoptable. It was the longest 3 weeks of my life! She sent me pictures and I knew he was meant to be ours. We hoped and prayed that his tests came back okay. Thankfully, they did. He had an allergy problem, but no worse for the wear. When we took him home he still had some itching and hive problems, but we got it figured out in no time. He is feeling much better and looks great! Brutus is the most loving, kind and easy going dog. We get comments from everyone, "I can't believe he's so laid back!". He is the perfect match for our family. When we got him he already knew kennel, sit, outside and treat (of course). He is so well behaved, we don't even shut the door on the kennel anymore. He gets to free roam all day, enjoying the life of VERY LOVED dog. |
