Edith Wharton Our lives will forever be enriched because of the dachsies that touched our hearts in rescue, but we know the real healing does not begin until they leave our care. We encourage, we celebrate, we do everything we can to give them the skills they need to put their best paw forward as they wait for their forever families to find them . . . and then the time comes to say goodbye. Often we shed tears. We remember when they came in, how far they’ve come, the hiccups along the way – we laugh, we cry – and then we always say a little prayer as we send them on their way. We hope they find the confidence to keep that best paw forward, because we know, when they do, they will truly flourish. It is then, they will heal; it is then, they will find peace. Jaylo aka - JUNO Juno came to our family initially as a foster back in July, 2008. Her chocolate and tan dappled coat was so amazingly unique that I just had to get to know her! Little did I know that Juno had no intention of wanting to get to know me or any other human. Juno was the most shy, timid and scared dachshund that I had met to date. I remember her tilting her head just so that she would not have to look me in the eyes. I would have to hold her head in my hand and make her look me in the eyes when I talked to her and reassured her that she was now safe and loved. It took at least 3 months before Juno finally gave me the most precious gift ever...a tender doxie kiss on my cheek! I cried at first then yelled to my husband that Juno was no longer broken! Not long after that we officially adopted Juno and made her part of our family forever. I sometimes wondered if Juno remembered her past life as a momma breeder that someone used to make a profit. I also found myself thinking that I would have loved to see her puppies. But I would stop myself and think that those puppies were used to make someone money and never once was money spent to give Juno basic veterinary care. The 5 teeth left in her mouth are proof of her past breeder life.
I now embrace the fact that Juno being a rescue dog has made her who she is today...and she is the BEST EVER! Juno's nudging of my hand and snuggling in the crook of my arm while taking a nap makes me so thankful for our time together. She has done a complete 180 and I can't imagine my life without her.
To anyone considering getting a dog...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider adopting a rescue dog. If Juno had a voice she would say "Be open-hearted, be patient, be understanding and you will be love unconditionally."
Trudy We brought Halo (aka Trudy) to her new home on May 1st. She was greeted by 3 sisters, Jewel, Miley, Maisy and 1 brother Jeb all dachshunds except for Jewel whom is a Black Lab. Halo was so shy and timid being the new-comer and being surrounded by all these new family members was a bit overwhelming. The first few days she just wanted mom and dad to hold her. We are constantly taking her outside so she understands this is the area where she needs to do her duty. The problem with being outside is there is this ‘stuff’ called grass and she is not so sure she likes the feel on her feet. You can tell she was accustom to being in a cage so she uses the cement patio for her relief. Currently she still does not like grass very much but will walk in it for awhile just to take in all the different smells. She has learned to play with the other dogs and many times is the instigator when starting up a rough house play session. She may be deaf but she knows how to bark and get her point across with the others. She also has been introduced to the world of doggie toys. We have a community toy box for all the puppies though she has chosen her favorite to be a orange stuffed dachshund that now has very little stuffing left inside. We find her especially amusing at meal time. When we are preparing their meal she is the one running thru the house as fast as her little feet will take her, head held high letting everyone know it is time to eat. In fact I have started to call her ‘My little chef’ since she is the one always in the kitchen helping me fix and prepare our meal. If only I could teach her to do the dishes! Bedtime is quite a process also. We let our doxies sleep with mom and dad. So Halo has decided not to go to sleep until both mom and dad are in bed. This makes it really hard to fall asleep if you are the poor soul who has decided to go to bed first. She will run back and forth thru the house as if to say ‘Come on it is bedtime’. Which doesn’t really have any effect on dad (usually the last one in bed) but poor mom listens to those little feet constantly running up and down the hallway. We have purchased new bicycles this year so we can do a lot more riding this summer. So of course we purchased a doggie pull behind trailer for one of the bikes. Halo loves to ride in the trailer with her sister. She sits back, head held high just breathing in the fresh air. I have included a picture of her and her sister Maisy in the bike trailer. We wish to thank Dakota Dachshund Rescue especially Judy and her family for taking in our little girl and keeping safe and loved until we met her and needed her become part of our family. Halo means ‘circle of light’ and that is exactly what our little angel is. Sandy Johnson
Grace WELL, WE FAILED "FOSTERING 101"! AFTER VOLUNTEERING TO FOSTER MISS GRACE, SHE STOLE OUR HEARTS AND WE KNEW THAT SHE HAD FOUND HER FOREVER HOME WITH OUR 3 SENIOR DACHSIE BOYS. SHE IS MY SILENT SHADOW AS I GO ABOUT MY DAILY CHORES; MY LAP COMPANION AS I WATCH TV; SLEEPS ON THE BIG BED AFTER GIVING EVERYONE GOOD NIGHT KISSES. SHE HAS ANOTHER NEW NAME " MISS MOMMA DOG GRACE" BECAUSE SHE SENSES WHEN EITHER DOG OR MAN NEEDS A KISS OR CUDDLING. SHE IS STILL VERY CAUTIOUS AROUND STRANGERS (ESPECIALLY FEMALES) SHE WILL HIDE UNDER THE BED. WE DON'T PUSH HER ON THIS. WE ARE BOTH WORKING THE HOUSEBREAKING ISSUE. AS A FORMER PUPPYMILL DOG, SHE WAS NEVER TRAINED! ALL SHE KNEW WAS HOW TO PRODUCE LITTER AFTER LITTER TO MAKE MONEY FOR SOMEONE. ALL OF THAT IS BEHIND HER NOW AS SHE LEARNS HOW TO PLAY AND THAT IT IS OK TO GO OUTSIDE AND THAT SHE CAN COME BACK INTO THE HOUSE, AGAIN. 8/2008 PAWS UP...TAILS WAGGING.. BOB DONHAM, AKA "DONHAM-OLESON RETIREMENT HOME FOR SENIOR, ELDERLY AND GERIATRIC DACHSHUNDS" 8/2009 UPDATE: 1year ago, Grace came into our lives like ray of Sunshine! Whether we've been out to the store, or came back inside from taking out the trash, collecting the mail or stepped out of the shower, she is at our feet, her front feet and legs boucning off the floor! At this year's annual dental checkup she 14 of her 18 remaing teeth!! All she has left are her 4 upper and lower front cannines! Dry kibble became out of the question! But we were no closer to the concept of "Going Potty Outside"! I would open the dining room door, put her out on the covered porch and close the door. Within 2 minutes, she would be screaming in terror and throwing herself at the glass door! AFter a few more minutes of this and afraid she would break the glass and be hurt, we would open the door and she would scurry down the hall into the office where she had her "daytime security bed" next to my desk! But when we weren't looking, she sneak out into the hall and there would be a puddle or worse. We had learned more and more about puppy mills and that sometimes survivors like Grace never get over some of that trauma. So the Steam Cleaner became our best friend! Until a week ago! The "Senior Boys" were out in the backyard. I sat on the top step of the 2 steps leading from the porch into the backyard watching 4 old Dachshie Gents barking at the same 2 squirrels on the back fence that they had barked at 10 times a day since Noah let them get off the Ark! Grace came running out of the open dining room door flew across porch and skidded to stop at the top step next to me! Barking and bouncing up and down but not trying to go down the 2 small steps. Suddenly, the light came on! I picked her up, put her down on the grass and she went dashing across the backyard to join the boys in the bark-a-thon! Grace didn't know how to go down those 2 steps!!! Kept in a small wire cage for 8 years and having 16 litters of pups, she had no idea how to go down steps and was terrified of falling and being hurt and not have a clue how to get back up again! Since then, about every 2 hours, I walk toward the door know Grace will be at my heals. I pick her up, put her down on the grass and say "Gracie, Go Potty Outside?" And with seconds she does! As long as I am sitting on the top step, she wonders all over the back yard, studies every blade of grass, sniffs at the lilac bush and watches birds. But, if I get up and go inside she dashes to to bottom step screaming in terror! She has no idea how to climb those 2 steps! In the last week, have only had to get the steam cleaner out once...when Gus threw up! PAWS UP...TAILS WAGGING.. RESCUERS NEVER STOP LEARNING.. Gracie's "Daddy Bob"
Sundance Hello, Sorry that it took me so long to reply, we have been busy with alot of different stuff. Sundance has been doing great. At first we were having issues with loose stools and ended up taking him to our vet and finding out that there were a couple of bugs growing so we are now on our second course of meds and it appears to be clearing up. Otherwise he has been a wonderful new addition, sundance like to curl up on or next to anyone who will let him, loves running around playing with Maggie, and just loves to have someone around. He is a very good contrast to maggie who always barks at every little thing, he just sits and doesnt get all work up, very laid back. We are very happy that we could give sundance his forever home and he seems to like it here too. Cheryl and Zach Delvaux
Harley Harley came to us as a foster to start with, we thought he would work with our dogs because we have a blind double dapple dog so we had some experience with the more challenging dogs. Everyone that has seen Harley loves his coloring, but being deaf, he presented some special problems, as we had to learn gestures to command him. Some days we thought Forrest Gump was a more fitting name for him! As he settled in, he got along with our blind doxie, they learned how to play hide and seek together-not too hard to hide from a blind dog. They also walk well together always right by each other. It did not take long to see that as entertaining as Harley was, there was NO way we were going to let him leave our home. On June 30th for an anniversary gift my dad gave my mom Harley. Although some days Harley maybe a challenge with his antics like: being pidgeon-toed, snorting like a bull at the door when you shut it, or taking a huge belly flop into the bed about 2:00 a.m., or the best spinning in circles for his supper.
