Edith Wharton Our lives will forever be enriched because of the dachsies that touched our hearts in rescue, but we know the real healing does not begin until they leave our care. We encourage, we celebrate, we do everything we can to give them the skills they need to put their best paw forward as they wait for their forever families to find them . . . and then the time comes to say goodbye. Often we shed tears. We remember when they came in, how far they’ve come, the hiccups along the way – we laugh, we cry – and then we always say a little prayer as we send them on their way. We hope they find the confidence to keep that best paw forward, because we know, when they do, they will truly flourish. It is then, they will heal; it is then, they will find peace. Frannie Hi! In July of 2010, I drove to Sioux Falls to visit with the lovely folks of DDR and met Frannie, a beautiful mini Doxie. My daughters and I brought her home to Iowa and she quickly fit in with the rest of our family. You will be happy to know she is still quite the princess! She enjoys walks with her best friends Samantha and Abby and always gets a treat when she comes home. We love getting Doxie kisses every morning and Frannie even has her own wardrobe. And of course there's lots of belly rubs! We love her just as much as the day we met her at the pet fair. I commend all those who tirelessly work to protect these little creatures. Bruno My husband and I lost our beloved dachshund, Oscar, in November 2011. He was only 5 years old and it was one of the worst experiences of our lives. After the dust settled we knew we wanted to adopt from DDR. I had fostered 2 dogs with the rescue in the past. Let's face it; once you have a dachshund, no other breed will do. I had called Diane to talk to her about a dog that had just been adopted by his foster mom. Diane had another dog in mind-Brutus (also known as Bruno). He wasn't up for adoption yet as she was waiting for some blood work to come back to ensure he was adoptable. It was the longest 3 weeks of my life! She sent me pictures and I knew he was meant to be ours. We hoped and prayed that his tests came back okay. Thankfully, they did. He had an allergy problem, but no worse for the wear. When we took him home he still had some itching and hive problems, but we got it figured out in no time. He is feeling much better and looks great! Brutus is the most loving, kind and easy going dog. We get comments from everyone, "I can't believe he's so laid back!". He is the perfect match for our family. When we got him he already knew kennel, sit, outside and treat (of course). He is so well behaved, we don't even shut the door on the kennel anymore. He gets to free roam all day, enjoying the life of VERY LOVED dog.
Sasha Hi! Well it has been GREAT with Sasha and Penni. On the way home, Sasha was on Barb's lap most of the way home and Penni was on Joi's lap or right next to her. They have bonded very fast. Three of my other older girls had called or text us on the way home wanting to see the girls. Jenni our oldest and her 2 boys were the first to meet them and Sasha was very sociable with them, and then Juli came over when we got home and again Sasha was great and then on to my other daughter's house Jazi for a visit and Sasha was very sociable there to. She loves to be pet. When we first got to your home and Sasha came right to me and let me pet her, I new Sasha was going home with us. Sometime I'll get a picture to you of me in my chair with Gus on one side and Sasha on the other and Penni laying on my chest. Now on to Penni. as you can see we are spelling her name a little different and here is why. These are my daughters names, Jenni, Jaci, Juli, Jazi, and Joi. All ending in i so Penni had to keep the tradition going. Penni has taken to Joi and followers her around like Gus follows me around. Penni on Monday came to me in my office and just looked up at me and then gave out a little woof so I had to pick her up and hold her, she is so cute that way. Her little woof is how she lets us know she wants to be held. We were surprised as to how fast Sasha moved, she got playful with Gus and was running around the house, that did my heart good to see that. And then Penni and Gus were nose to nose (kissing) that's the best way to describe it. All three get along great. Here are some pictures of the girls and Gus on the couch on there pillow with there blankets. One big happy famliy ! ! ! We want to thank you for letting us adopt Sasha and Penni in to our family. I was (Mike) adopted at 18 months old myself so I know it's a great feeling to find that forever home!

Charlie Sorry it took sooo long to write - these boys have kept me very busy. I just want to say THANKS for allowing me to adopt Charlie. He has become a big part of this family, and we enjoy spending every minute with him. I was worried at first how long it would take Charlie to warm up to me, but I gave him his space the first day and by the next day he was attached to my hip. The following day he had to go to my Aunts while I went to work and he cried for me for hours, but with his new big brother Snickers, which has been a great help, he has learned the daily routine. We had a few accidents on the floor, but with patience it didn't take long to understand he must go outside to potty. You should see how fast he runs around the yard. It almost makes you dizzy watching him! He is such a happy go lucky dog now. He gives plenty of kisses and wags his tail so much, I worry he will fly away! Also, it is so cute when I give him a bone. He will hide it in his mouth like a chipmunk and walk around with it till he finds the perfect spot to lay and chew on it. It cracks me up every time. He has so many toys now and some days he can't make up his mind which one to play with. He enjoys watching out the window in car rides and he is a very good walker. For Christmas, they both got their own gifts to open. We love to spoil these boys, and I am sure they enjoy that too. His deafness has not slowed him down at all and some days I forget he can't hear because he is so aware of his surroundings that you would never know.
