Edith Wharton Our lives will forever be enriched because of the dachsies that touched our hearts in rescue, but we know the real healing does not begin until they leave our care. We encourage, we celebrate, we do everything we can to give them the skills they need to put their best paw forward as they wait for their forever families to find them . . . and then the time comes to say goodbye. Often we shed tears. We remember when they came in, how far they’ve come, the hiccups along the way – we laugh, we cry – and then we always say a little prayer as we send them on their way. We hope they find the confidence to keep that best paw forward, because we know, when they do, they will truly flourish. It is then, they will heal; it is then, they will find peace. Betsy Betsy came to live with us in July 2008 on trial and has been here ever since. She is an absolute joy!!! We've nicknamed her Little Bear because her soft hair pretty much sticks straight out and she's so fluffy. She's trimmed down a little more and weighs in around 20 pounds now. She was 10 years old when we got her and had lived in a nursing home in another state with her previous owner. She had been forced to leave because of policy changes at the home and ended up in rescue in Sioux Falls. We already had a 6 year old wonderful female rescue doxy, Daisy, who needed a companion. After our 14 year old precious little male died, Daisy had just crashed with grief and we feared losing her also. Time and lots of love and extra attention brought her around and it was finally time to find her (and us) another pal. My heart went out to Betsy after reading her story and seeing her picture. Daisy and I went to see her and brought her home. The two are so good together. They love their walks, the grandkids, kohlrabi and carrots from the garden, going for rides, and don't ever let me forget the nightly Greenie.... My husband says they have trained me well but he is absolutely bonkers over both of them. We are blessed to have found Betsy to add to our home.
Binger Binger our four year old French Bulldog and Beast, our ten year old Shih Tzu. Binger has joined forces with Beast to warn us when someone arrives at our home. Binger and Beast are together the entire day. We enjoy cuddling with both of them. Binger gives us kisses, something Beast doesnât like to do. We have learned that Binger likes to tear up dog beds. She is adorable and a wonderful addition to our family.
Bruno My husband and I lost our beloved dachshund, Oscar, in November 2011. He was only 5 years old and it was one of the worst experiences of our lives. After the dust settled we knew we wanted to adopt from DDR. I had fostered 2 dogs with the rescue in the past. Let's face it; once you have a dachshund, no other breed will do. I had called Diane to talk to her about a dog that had just been adopted by his foster mom. Diane had another dog in mind-Brutus (also known as Bruno). He wasn't up for adoption yet as she was waiting for some blood work to come back to ensure he was adoptable. It was the longest 3 weeks of my life! She sent me pictures and I knew he was meant to be ours. We hoped and prayed that his tests came back okay. Thankfully, they did. He had an allergy problem, but no worse for the wear. When we took him home he still had some itching and hive problems, but we got it figured out in no time. He is feeling much better and looks great! Brutus is the most loving, kind and easy going dog. We get comments from everyone, "I can't believe he's so laid back!". He is the perfect match for our family. When we got him he already knew kennel, sit, outside and treat (of course). He is so well behaved, we don't even shut the door on the kennel anymore. He gets to free roam all day, enjoying the life of VERY LOVED dog.
Bella Some pictures of bella still ajusting to things and daisy, She is doing good no accidents and she is eating good.ust a quick update on how Bella is doing! What a wonderful gift she is to us! She has transitioned quite well to her new home - eating, sleeping and potty training readjustment. I am trying to download pictures, but I am not very good at it. My grandson spent the last 3 days with us and he and Bella did very well. Daisy and Bella continue to get adjusted to each other and today they finally got on the couch together! I bought Bella a sweater for those cold days, but she walked right out of it - hopefully it will stay on when she has to go outside to the bathroom.
Butch Frank (formerly Bruno/Butch) has just fit right in so well, we nearly forgot it hasn't even been a year yet :) Frank is in great shape. He is a big fan of squeeky toys and picking on his big brother, Bruno (the bassett hound). It's been a little chilly this year so he and Lilly (the cat) enjoy taking turns sleeping in front of the heat register. Frank is a pillar of health with a great appetite!
