Edith Wharton Our lives will forever be enriched because of the dachsies that touched our hearts in rescue, but we know the real healing does not begin until they leave our care. We encourage, we celebrate, we do everything we can to give them the skills they need to put their best paw forward as they wait for their forever families to find them . . . and then the time comes to say goodbye. Often we shed tears. We remember when they came in, how far they’ve come, the hiccups along the way – we laugh, we cry – and then we always say a little prayer as we send them on their way. We hope they find the confidence to keep that best paw forward, because we know, when they do, they will truly flourish. It is then, they will heal; it is then, they will find peace. Patsy Tomorrow is Blossom's "Gotcha Day" one year ago. (Previously known as Patsy.) What a blessing this little dog has been! She is the perfect dog for me and I see her as a gift from God. He gave me the desire of my heart. When I came to Dakota Dachshund Rescue to look at her, Diane was filling me in on her history. She came from a breeding operation and had not had much human contact. I said "It will be fun to see her Blossom" , and as I said that, I thought that should be her name. And Blossom she has!! Today she is a totally different dog. She has gone from hiding in the corner cowering to running outside, owning her yard. Her sweet little personality is immerging more and more every day. She is much more confident and just wants to please. She has come through a life threatening situation as well. She ended up with a hernia and her bowel was strangulated. Two inches of it has to be removed. The vet was very concerned as to whether she would survive. I am so thankful that she did and is doing great! I am looking forward to many more years of fun adventures (hopefully no more surgeries!!) with Blossom! Thank you so much Diane and everyone at Dakota Dachshund Rescue for all you do! Reeses First impressions are not always accurate. We thought we might have adopted a sweet,DDR Dalmatian mix since she had been shaved & had numerous spots showing through her fur but she ended up looking like a bischon! Rescued dogs are the best! They know they have been given a second chance at a loving home. Thanks DDR for rescuing our perfect pup dog we now call Salty! She rescued us as much as we rescued her.
Betsy Betsy came to live with us in July 2008 on trial and has been here ever since. She is an absolute joy!!! We've nicknamed her Little Bear because her soft hair pretty much sticks straight out and she's so fluffy. She's trimmed down a little more and weighs in around 20 pounds now. She was 10 years old when we got her and had lived in a nursing home in another state with her previous owner. She had been forced to leave because of policy changes at the home and ended up in rescue in Sioux Falls. We already had a 6 year old wonderful female rescue doxy, Daisy, who needed a companion. After our 14 year old precious little male died, Daisy had just crashed with grief and we feared losing her also. Time and lots of love and extra attention brought her around and it was finally time to find her (and us) another pal. My heart went out to Betsy after reading her story and seeing her picture. Daisy and I went to see her and brought her home. The two are so good together. They love their walks, the grandkids, kohlrabi and carrots from the garden, going for rides, and don't ever let me forget the nightly Greenie.... My husband says they have trained me well but he is absolutely bonkers over both of them. We are blessed to have found Betsy to add to our home.
Binger Binger our four year old French Bulldog and Beast, our ten year old Shih Tzu. Binger has joined forces with Beast to warn us when someone arrives at our home. Binger and Beast are together the entire day. We enjoy cuddling with both of them. Binger gives us kisses, something Beast doesnât like to do. We have learned that Binger likes to tear up dog beds. She is adorable and a wonderful addition to our family.
Sallie In October 2016, at the Halloween adoption day, we brought Sallie home to Rochester, MN. We lost our Heidi in June and our long-haired doxie Reba was lonely. It was the first time she had been at a meet and greet in awhile: it was our lucky day. Even though she was a senior, we fell in love with her, and she got along great with Reba. Sallie Sioux (as we call her) makes us laugh. Her run is so cute. Typical Dachshund - on walks, she smells more than walks. She loves camping with us, Reba and our adopted cat, Clawdia. At the camper, her favorite place is in front of the fireplace, and likes the golf cart rides into the woods. She can sniff around and then get a ride back to the camper. Among the four doggie beds in the house, her favorite is next to our bed. Her vision and hearing is not the best, but that endears her to us even more.
