More about Maximus

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

Special Needs: When dogs have allergies they are typically not food driven. They are environmental. That is not to say they can’t be food derived. But it’s much less common than environmental factors. Allergies manifest in the skin in dogs. They don’t get hay fever symptoms like humans. The ears are just an extension of the skin, so that’s why ears get infected. They have low level inflammation in the skin and the ears are a warm moist environment that’s a perfect breeding ground for the yeast and bacteria which are normal flora on a dogs skin. Talk with your vet about a daily allergy medication plus some omega 3&6 fatty acid supplements can help immensely. Keeping the hair groomed really short in/around the ears is helpful. Also get an ear cleaner that has a drying agent in it. Make ear cleaning a regular routine to help keep the ears dry inside. If swimming or a bath happens, immediately clean the ears with that cleaner. There is an injection you can get for allergies called cytopoint. I’ve seen it work wonders in dogs with chronic ear infections. Cockers are one of the top breeds that are predisposed to ear infections unfortunately as I’m sure you guys know. There are also long acting compounded ear meds that you might ask your vet about if that’s never been tried.
