Mr. Schotzi was found as a stray in the Black Hills.  Cold, hungry, dehydrated, scared with facial lacerations, he was taken to the Black Hills Humane Society.  The Shelter Staff held little hope for his survival but he gobbled his food,  drank bowls of water, had his facial injuries treated and wrapped in warm blankets.  During the next few days, this remarkable "No-Name Old Guy" surprised everyone and touched a few hearts along the way.

Through a chain of events, DDR was contacted and "Did we have room for "No-Name Old Guy" who might have some  form of seizure disorder? We really didn't have room but, this Beautiful Old Gent needed our help and joined our other Dachsies on March 6, 2009.

Upon his arrival in Sioux Falls, his Foster Dads' first thoughts were that the chance that he would survive much longer were very slim.  At least he would be safe, warm, a full belly and know he was loved.  Again, Mr. Schotzie surprised everyone!

He was in critical need of dental care and his  blood work showed no major issues that would prevent taking care of his serious decay and oral infection.   During the dental surgery, there was a problem with slowing heartbeat; because of the danger involved the decision was made not to neuter him.  When he returned to his foster home, Schotzie was a changed Lad!  Without the terrible pain in his mouth and the infection under control, he gobbled up each meal and asked for more; between meals he was now able to eat kibble.  Slowly, he is beginning to gain some much needed weight.

Schotzie is leash trained and loves to go for walks. He likes car rides and soft rubber squeaky toys. His house manners are faultless; not one single accident!  Most amazing is his activity level.  He loves the backyard and chasing the squirrels and barking at the cats alone the back wall..  He has taught  his "Foster Fur-Buddies" the game of chase.  Schotize takes much joy in life now that he isn't hungry, cold, thirsty, scared or in pain and now has a lap to snuggle up on.

He will need a fenced yard in settled adult home with another adult or senior "Fur-Buddy" to hang out with!  He has had 2 small seizures since his arrival and will probably be on a low cost anti-seizure medication.   If you love seniors and know how much love they give in return, Schotize needs you and the Forever Home that you can give him.   His adoption fee is $150.00  NOTE:  Our Senior Dachsie Advocate, Bob Donham, can help you with any questions about adopting a senior wiener dog.  According to Bob, SENIOR DACHSIES ROCK!!

UPDATE 8/11/09: Schotzie has not had any further seizures since mid-April. Because of this, he was not put on any anti-seizure medications.  He is one "VERY ACTIVE GENT" very much enjoys literally running after squirrels in the backyard and never learning that they can run and climb trees much faster than he can.  Walks now turn into jogging marathons leaving his Foster Dad out of breath and needing a nap himself! He is a "barker"!  Once his "bark machine" starts it doesn't stop!  His other "Fur-Buddies" in his foster home, when told "No, Bark! Inside", do just that.  They stop barking at the dog next door, go back in the house and continue their naps.  But, not Mr. Schotzie!  His Foster Dad must go out, pick the still barking Mr. Schotzie up and carry him back inside with "The Schotze" barking all the way!

After a busy day filled with running and barking in the warm sun, Schotzie finally "crashes" on the couch with 4 or 5 of his  Fur-Buddies and  his Foster Dad.  When the TV goes off, he dashes for the bedroom; not to sleep in the comfy dog bed provided or up on the big bed but, under the big bed , sprawled on his back, where, in his sleep, he continues to loudly chase squirrels several time during the night!  "The Schotze"..What a Guy!

Update 9/2009.  Schotzie had a couple of back-to-back seizures so has been put on a low dose of phenobarital to prevent them from progressing further.  He has had no problems with the meds or any further seizures.  We still find his activity level amazing. He loves being out the backyard and barking at the blue sky, birds flying overhead, the dogs next door, the squirrels in the trees, Miss Cat on the back wall and anything else that moves.

Update 10/2010.  The "Schotze Man"continues to surprise and amaze everyone with his energy and playfulness.  So hard to believe that Dr. Heidi estimates his age at 15+ yrs.   Still is an outdoor "bark machine" that can only be halted if he is literally picked up and carried inside!    What a Guy!
